Above: looking up at the 'Blue Bird' clematis growing under a spruce tree in my backyard.
This vine was one of the few things growing in the neglected, overgrown garden I inherited with my house 8 years ago. It is growing under a spruce tree i.e. extremely poor, dry soil and shade. I never water, fertilize or do anything to it except maybe cut back a few stray tendrils once in a while. This plant just amazes me! If you have a tough, dry, shady spot that needs something with a little height, try a trellis or obelisk with one of these vines. I don't think you will be disappointed!
One of my favorite new additions to my garden. I planted one last fall and I loved it so much this spring that I planted another one.
