My husband took these pictures yesterday of a male Merlin hanging out in our Mountain Ash and spruce trees in our backyard. According to my bird book, these small falcons come to heavily treed areas of cities in the winter to hunt waxwings... which not surprisingly we also had visiting our Mountain Ash tree yesterday. Watch out, my beautiful little waxwings!
We moved to Dalhousie this fall and I'm loving the bird action! ;) The spruce tree behind us must have had nearly one hundred waxwings in it 2 weekends ago. It was awesome to watch.

A beautiful bird, but not one you want near your feeder! The Bohemian Waxwings have been moving in great clouds through there too. I just love them. Someday I hope to get a video of them rising and landing throughout the neighbourhood.
