Welcome, March! I love this time of year - the quiet anticipation. It is time to start dreaming of possibilities and what changes/additions I'm going to make in the garden this year, but it is still too early to act on those dreams.
It is, however, time to start posting monthly to-do lists again. But if you're in zone 3, and in Calgary especially, don't get too excited. Enjoy the quiet anticipation just a little longer...
My March garden to-do list
- Don't expect to do anything outside until at least April to avoid disappointment! We get the most snow in March.
- Start fertilizing house plants with a half-strength water-soluble fertilizer.
- Clean seed flats and get ready to start seeds. DO NOT start seeds too early! I've learned this lesson the hard way. The average last frost date in Calgary is considered to be May 24 so count backwards from then to figure out when to start various seeds. Information about number of weeks before the last frost date will be on the package. I've also written about when to start vegetable seeds in Calgary here.
- Start snapdragon seeds in early March and tomatoes in late March.
- Finish pruning dormant, late-blooming shrubs and trees.
- Finish winter indoor projects... more on this later if I actually finish them...
