This weather must be getting to me. I keep saying that you shouldn't even dream about gardening in Calgary until at least mid-April (when it's time to put pansies outside) - that way you don't set yourself up for inevitable disappointment and frustration when the snow storms of March and April (and probably May) blow through...
But ever since I wrote that article I've been thinking of Piet-Oudolf-ifying my garden a little. So I just ordered from Bluestem nursery:
- 25 deschampsia cespitosa (tufted hair grass)
- 25 festuca glauca (blue fescue)
- 1 helictotrichon sempervirens (blue oat grass)
- 1 sporobulus heterolepis (prairie dropseed)
I have nothing more than a vague idea of where I'm going to put all of these ornamental grasses! So much for garden planning and design...
What are you doing to stay sane until spring arrives?
There is very little sanity between now and "should I risk planting this now?" time! I am putting together my spring order-I think I'll try cannas this year.

I have a bucket of dirt in sealed container to get me through the tough months. I garden in Ontario and we will be in the same boat. No planting until at least the end of April- Early May. I can repot a few houseplants or start some babies to get me through and start my wish list for the new season!!

How very wise. Ive started some seeds too, if nothing else so that I can feel like Im gardening and to resist the urge to spend more money!
Cheers,
Janice
