Here is my house in 2004, the year we moved in. As you can see, I wasted no time in starting to remove some of the front lawn! Unfortunately, the deck was rotted and had to come out the next year.
Anyway, I couldn't stand the orangey-brown colour, especially with yellow trim. In 2006 we painted the house blue (actually, my Dad did.) I know, I know, neutral beiges are currently trendy and much more sophisticated looking, but in a city that looks brown for most of the year, I need colour wherever possible!
So now I am starting to think about trim colours, because the yellow has got to go too! (please don't laugh at my weak photoshop skills!)
I can't quite decide, so I am asking for opinions. Here is what I am currently thinking though:
I love the funky chartreuse trim in the top photos, but am thinking it's too impractical. In a couple of years, we want to start replacing all the windows and will probably go with low-maintenance vinyl frames on the outside. Therefore, the trim needs to be a fairly standard colour. (and by the way, I'm not up to painting the eavestroughs right now so they will stay brown)
While not as bright, I also like the light blue-ish/teal-ish/grey-ish trim. Now what do you think about a door colour?
[Update: Elli, one of the artists in my family, says green trim. She would pick the less practical one...!]
I like white trim - with wide, substantial boards for the trim. It would give your house a fresh cottage look. Then I would paint the front door a lime green or a raspberry red.
This way also, if you get new windows - white vinyl- it will blend, or if you ever decide to sell, your house is very classic in colour and design and the new owner can change the door colour in an afternoon if they want.
Love the blue!

Yes, white trim would look nice and be much more practical, wouldn't it? Not quite as colourful and funky as I am dreaming of, though. So it comes down to the ultimate question - do I want funky or do I want practical? I am still undecided on this question... usually the practical side of me wins... I'll let you know!
