These shrubs are very common but I love their colours so much that I don't care! I am definatley not a plant snob - I like things that are easy to grow. I now have 3 goldmounds in my front garden and plan to add more. The leaves emerge red in the spring, and gradually change to yellow. Later, the yellow leaves contrast well with the pink flowers.
The rabbits in my neighbourhood seem to enjoy them too. This one gets eaten almost to the ground every year, but bounces back no problem. Actually, it's fine with me because I like to keep them fairly small. Sometimes they also die back in the winter - just prune off the dead stuff once they start to leaf out in spring and they'll be fine.
'Goldmound' spirea is a similar shrub with slightly greener foliage.
