We need to talk! My bugbane has never looked like the picture! Though I have the one with bright green leaves...

Sure, but I don't really know what to say. Could it be the variety that makes the difference? I do give this plant a generous heap of compost each year, and the extra water from the kitchen, as I mentioned. It's also in a sheltered location so perhaps that helps...?
